Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has raised the salary of 67 security guards at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (Lautech) Hospital from N18,800 to N80,000 after they appealed to him during an event at the facility.

One of the guards, given a microphone, recounted their struggles, revealing that they had protested as far back as June 2021 without any resolution.

“On the 1st of June, 2021, we raised placards, asking you to help us. We’ve been here before Otunba Alao Akala and before the work of this place is completed. We are not staff but indigenes of Oyo State, please help us, we are suffering. I have a family and three children; my age is fast running out. Please help us, your excellency,” the guard tearfully told the governor.

When Governor Makinde inquired about their salary, the guard said they earned N18,800 monthly. A hospital representative clarified that the workers were outsourced personnel, with the outsourcing firm receiving N27,000 per guard.

In response, Governor Makinde announced an immediate solution: “I can solve the problem right away by saying that all 67 should be converted directly to ad-hoc workers and you will get N80,000 every month from the first of October.”

The announcement was met with cheers and jubilation from the guards and onlookers, as the governor’s decision more than quadrupled their earnings.
