Shakira facing new tax investigation in Spain
Shakira is facing a new tax probe in Spain as an investigation begins into two potential offences.
Officials confirmed on Thursday that a court near Barcelona had agreed to investigate the Colombian singer-songwriter at the request of state prosecutors for suspected 2018 tax breaches.
The 46-year-old, who relocated to Miami in April of this year with her two sons following her split from former footballer Gerard Pique, will have to return to the Catalan capital again in November for the beginning of her £12.5 million tax fraud trial.
Last July, prosecutors called for an eight-year prison sentence and multi-million euro fine for singer if found guilty of six counts of tax fraud in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Shakira has denied any wrongdoing and insisted she will fight the accusations levied against her in court instead of seeking a last-minute deal with Spanish state prosecutors.
The new probe relates to her taxes from 2018, and will be conducted by a judge at a court in Esplugues de Llobregat – the same court which launched the earlier investigation resulting in her being ordered to stand trial.
