Nigerian skitmaker and satirical content creator Kevin Chinedu, popularly known for his “Governor Amuneke” character, has explained why he rejected an offer to serve as a Youth Ambassador for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

In a video shared on his X handle on Monday, Amuneke said he was contacted through social media about the role and initially felt honoured by the recognition.

“Reports came to me that I was going to be appointed as INEC Youth Ambassador. I have never felt as proud of myself when I got that message,” he said.

He added that the moment was emotional for him, considering his background and the struggles he faced before gaining recognition as a content creator.

“This is supposed to be a national honour. I do not know how to feel about it, but it brought me tears of joy when I thought about how far I have come,” he added.

According to him, he was told the role would involve working with other prominent figures to encourage young Nigerians to participate in civic duties such as voter registration and elections.

However, Amuneke said his excitement changed after he raised concerns about whether the position would affect the nature of his content, which is largely focused on political satire and criticism.

“I asked a simple question. I said, ‘Am I going to still be able to criticise INEC if I’m appointed?’” he said.

He explained that he was told he could continue creating content and promoting civic awareness, but would not be allowed to directly criticise the electoral body.

“They told me they have seen the type of content I do. All of that can still go on. As a matter of fact, I can even preach about getting PVCs and all of that. However, I cannot criticise directly INEC,” he stated.

Amuneke said the condition ultimately made him decline the offer, noting that his work is built on holding institutions accountable and reflecting the concerns of ordinary Nigerians.
