The Sokoto State Government has rolled out monthly stipends for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins, alongside fresh cash allocations to Jumu’at Mosques, as part of a wider push to strengthen Islamic teaching and Qur’anic memorisation among children
The initiative was unveiled on Saturday by Governor Ahmed Aliyu during the graduation of 111 Qur’an memorisers at the Sokoto branch of the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation.
Aliyu explained that the allowances and mosque funding — ranging between N300,000 and N500,000 depending on the category — will help clerics carry out their duties more effectively and ensure that Islamic teachings flourish across the state.
He stressed that Islamic affairs hold a prime position in his administration’s Nine-point Smart Agenda, second only to security, and urged school authorities to provide land for a permanent site for the foundation, pledging government support.
The event also drew commendations from Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who praised Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi for fostering Islamic scholarship and peaceful coexistence.
Former governor Aliyu Wamakko, represented by Aminu Sufi, urged parents to encourage Qur’anic memorisation, while Senator Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Lawal Liman, donated N22 million and food items to the school and graduands.
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, represented by his son, said the foundation’s expansion to other states aims to provide structured Qur’anic learning and curb street begging.
Each of the 111 graduands received N20,000 and clothing materials from the state government, with the ceremony concluding in Qur’anic recitations and prize presentations.
