Soldier gets de.ath sentence for k!lling lover

A General Court Martial (GCM) sitting at the Headquarters of the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, has sentenced Private Adamu Mohammed to de.ath by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend

The sentence was announced on Tuesday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhalu, who stated that the judgment followed due legal process and consideration of the offence.

The 11-member GCM was inaugurated on February 18, 2025, by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye.

Delivering the judgment, the President of the GCM, Brig.-Gen. Sadisu Buhari, said Mohammed was found guilty of murder, an offence punishable under Section 106(a) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004. Online learning

According to Brig.-Gen. Buhari, the panel’s unanimous verdict came after a thorough examination of the case facts, the soldier’s service record, and a plea for leniency from the accused and his counsel.

However, in the interest of justice and societal order, the law was upheld to its fullest extent.

“Given this, the GCM has determined that the accused soldier, 21NA/80/6365 Pte Adamu Mohammed, is hereby sentenced to death by hanging for the charge of murder,” he declared.

In a separate ruling, the GCM sentenced another soldier, Private Abubakar Yusuf, to 10 years in prison for robbery at a shopping mall in Enugu.

The panel found Yusuf guilty under Section 107(1)(b) of the Armed Forces Act. However, due to the GCM’s inability to reach a unanimous decision required to impose the maximum mandatory sentence under Section 107(2), it relied on Section 140(3) to issue a 10-year sentence.

“Despite considering the plea for leniency, the court has sentenced the accused soldier, 23NA/85/12116 Pte Abubakar Yusuf, to 10 years imprisonment,” Brig.-Gen. Buhari stated.

He added that the verdicts for both soldiers remain subject to confirmation by the appropriate authority, marking the conclusion of their trials.

The Nigerian Army, in its statement, reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline, professionalism, and ethical standards within its ranks.

“These incidents do not reflect the values of the Nigerian Army. Swift and decisive actions are taken to ensure justice and accountability. We remain dedicated to maintaining discipline, protecting the integrity of our operations, and building trust with the public,” the statement added.
