Reports indicate that on March 18, 2025, heavily armed soldiers surrounded the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt, effectively confining Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his family

The development followed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, suspending the governor, his deputy, and the state legislature for six months due to escalating political tensions and security concerns.
The crisis intensified after members of the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara, prompting threats from militant groups to attack oil installations if the move succeeded. In response, the federal government deployed military personnel to maintain order, leading to the current standoff at the Government House.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the president’s decision, insisting he lacks the constitutional authority to suspend a democratically elected governor and impose an unelected administrator. “Nigeria is not under military rule,” the party said, warning that such actions undermine democracy and the will of the people.
As of this morning, Fubara’s whereabouts remain uncertain, with reports suggesting he and his family are under military watch inside the Government House. The situation remains fluid as political tensions in the state continue to escalate.
