Somali pirates freed a hijacked ship called MV Abdullah and its 23 crew members after receiving a $5 million ransom.
According to one of the pirates, they received the money a couple of nights ago and checked if it was real. Then they split the money and left to avoid government forces. The ship, owned by KSRM Group in Bangladesh, had been seized in March while travelling from Mozambique to the United Arab Emirates. Somali pirates, who had been inactive for some years, seem to be resurfacing.
Maritime experts suggest that relaxed security measures or the chaos caused by conflicts in Yemen and Gaza may be encouraging pirate activity again.
