A Bangladeshi-owned bulk carrier that fell prey to pirates in the western Indian Ocean has declared the return of piracy in the region.

This resurgence worsens rhw existing challenges for shipping companies, including threats such as drone and missile strikes by Yemen’s Houthi militia.

Since November, there have been over 20 attempted hijackings. This has led to increased expenses for armed security personnel and insurance premiums. Somali pirates, taking advantage of reduced naval patrols, have resumed their activities after a period of relative dormancy lasting nearly a decade..

The situation has resulted in higher shipping costs, with companies facing additional expenses for war risk premiums and hiring private armed guards.

Efforts to mitigate this resurgence are underway, but the threat posed by Somali pirates continues to pose a significant challenge for the shipping industry.
