Three Nigerian nationals were deported from South Africa on Sunday, April 5, 2026, after authorities barred them from entry due to social media posts deemed “ins¥lting” toward the South African government. The incident took place at O. R. Tambo International Airport.
Among those deported was a media personality named Yemi, who said he and his companions were held despite having valid visas and travel documents. Yemi alleged that officials confiscated his phone, initially refused to arrange their return flight, and made him feel unsafe during the process.
South African immigration authorities confirmed the deportation, noting that one of the travellers had been flagged on a watchlist for previous online remarks criticizing the government. Officials said the situation escalated because the individual could not adequately explain or verify the posts during screening.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) stated that the travellers had been cleared for departure and were expected to arrive in Lagos on Monday morning. The commission advised Nigerians to secure visas through official channels, verify all application details, travel with proper documentation, and be cautious about social media activity, warning that offensive posts could result in denied entry.
NIDCOM also stressed the importance of using licensed travel agents, reviewing applications personally, and carrying genuine travel purposes to safeguard both individual and national reputation.
