Heavy winds, storms, and intense rainfall wreaked havoc across South Africa’s coastal province of Western Cape, causing at least one loss of life, authorities reported on Monday.
The severe weather prompted the closure of schools and highways, particularly in the Cape Winelands, Overberg, and West Coast regions, where houses, roads, and public infrastructure suffered damage. Officials are on high alert for further extreme weather.
The deceased was a security officer patrolling on a bike when a tree, uprooted by heavy winds, fell on him.
In Cape Town’s Glencairne area, heavy winds fueled wildfires, destroying at least eight houses.
By Monday afternoon, parts of Cape Town experienced power outages, affecting electricity supply. Emergency services were deployed by the provincial government to address the situation.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde urged caution and advised against unnecessary travel, noting that weather-related damages affected at least 26 schools province-wide.
The South African Weather Service issued high warnings for Western Cape, along with warnings for possible flooding in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, including Johannesburg. Flooding has become a recurring issue in KwaZulu-Natal, leading to fatalities and extensive property damage.
