South Korea's National Assembly impeaches acting President Han Duck-soo

The Acting President of South Korea, Han Duck-soo, has been impeached by the National Assembly

The motion was passed on Friday with unanimous support from all 192 lawmakers present

Speaker of the National Assembly, Woo Won-shik, announced the decision, stating that Han had actively participated in the insurrection following the declaration of martial law by his predecessor earlier this month.

“I announce that Prime Minister Han Duck-soo’s impeachment motion has passed. Out of the 192 lawmakers who voted, 192 voted to impeach,” Woo said.

The impeachment further escalates the political crisis in South Korea, which has seen growing unrest following the controversial martial law declaration by President Yoon Suk Yeol. Han’s refusal to appoint three justices to the Constitutional Court, as required by the National Assembly, had already strained his position.

With Han’s removal from office, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to assume the role of acting president. This move sets the stage for continued uncertainty in the South Korean political landscape. The Constitutional Court, which has been operating with just six justices due to vacancies, will review the impeachments of both President Yoon and Acting President Han.
