Southampton have parted ways with manager Russell Martin following a crushing 5-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, which left the club nine points adrift of Premier League safety

Martin, 38, guided Southampton to promotion last season, securing a memorable play-off final win over Leeds United at Wembley. However, his side has struggled in the top flight, managing just one win this season — a victory over Everton in November — and scoring a league-low 11 goals.
The Saints have lost 13 of their 16 league games, prompting the club to take action.
In a statement, Southampton acknowledged the challenges of adjusting to the Premier League but emphasized the need for improved results.
“Going into the season, we all knew the challenges of readjusting to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world,” the statement read. “The reality of our situation is clear. While we thank Russell and his staff for their hard work and dedication over the last 18 months, urgent improvements were necessary.”
The club also reflected on Martin’s achievements, particularly the play-off final victory in May, calling it a “fantastic memory for everyone connected with Southampton FC.”
Under-21s manager Simon Rusk will take interim charge of the team, with his first match being a Carabao Cup quarter-final against league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.
Martin’s departure coincided with Wolves’ decision to sack their manager, Gary O’Neil, on the same day.
