Activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore has vowed to reject the bail conditions set by the police, even if President Bola Tinubu volunteers to stand as his surety

The 2023 African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate is currently in police custody after being invited for questioning over allegations of cyberstalking, negligence, and intimidation. His arrest followed a viral video in which he confronted officers at a checkpoint in Lagos.
Sowore refused the police’s bail conditions, which required him to surrender his international passport and provide a Level 17 civil servant as surety. Calling the conditions “laughable, frivolous, and ridiculous,” he argued that the police have no right to impose such requirements.
“I cannot in good conscience participate in illegality. The police have no right to demand a civil servant with a N100 million house to stand as surety for me, an employer of labor and an internationally recognized publisher,” Sowore stated.
He described the demand for a Level 17 officer—a position held by permanent secretaries appointed by the president—as an insult.
“Even if President Tinubu appeared as my surety, I would reject this laughable and ridiculous bail condition,” he added.
Sowore further criticized the police for what he called an abuse of power, insisting that only a court should determine the status of his passport. He vowed to resist what he described as police impunity.
