Singer Spyro has recalled some difficult experiences from his childhood, including moments involving his pastor father that stayed with him for years.
He said his father would accuse him whenever money went missing in church, even going as far as telling other people that he was a thief.
Speaking in an interview, Spyro said:
“My dad is a pastor. He would tell people that I was a thief. Whenever money went missing in church, he would point to me and accuse me.
“Even after publicly embarrassing me, when he eventually found what he was looking for, he would buy me milk. But what could milk do to undo the damage that had already been done?.
“There was one particular incident I still get emotional thinking about. I told my dad that a school cleaner had scratched my head with her long nails, but he called me a liar.
“We went to confront her, but she denied knowing me. When we got home, my dad flogged me and left a mark on my back that is still there 22 years later. It broke me because I had told him the truth, yet I was punished for it.
“Thankfully, my mum’s love helped me through it. The experience affected me so much that I started thinking, ‘Since you already believe I’m a terrible child, then let me just be terrible.”
