The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Thursday, July 16, 2026, as the first day of Safar 1448AH after the crescent marking the beginning of the Islamic month was not sighted anywhere in Nigeria
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Junaidu.

According to the statement, neither the National Moonsighting Committee nor the various state moonsighting committees received any verified report confirming the sighting of the Safar crescent on Tuesday, July 14, which corresponded to the 29th of Muharram 1448AH.
As a result, Wednesday, July 15, was declared the 30th and final day of Muharram.
Following the committee’s report, the Sultan, who also serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), approved Thursday, July 16, 2026, as the first day of Safar 1448AH.
