Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu has officially retired from professional football, drawing the curtain on a career that spanned more than 10 years across the United States, France, and Nigeria
The 31-year-old announced her decision in an emotional statement shared on Instagram on Saturday, describing her retirement as a “natural conclusion” to a journey that began when she first kicked a ball at the age of eight.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I bid farewell to my playing career on the pitch,” she wrote, recalling her early days with youth side Magic in California and her childhood love for the game.
Onumonu, who switched allegiance from the U.S. to Nigeria in 2021, went on to represent the Super Falcons at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was also part of the team that clinched a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco in July 2025.
At club level, she featured for Boston Breakers, Portland Thorns, Reign FC, Utah Royals, and NJ/NY Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League before moving to France to play for Montpellier HSC. She also lifted the NWSL championship trophy during her career.
Reflecting on her achievements, the California-born striker highlighted her pride in wearing Nigeria’s green and white. “I had the profound pleasure of lifting an NWSL championship trophy, representing Nigeria at the Olympics and a World Cup, and helping to lift the African Cup of Nations trophy with the Super Falcons for a historic 10th time.”
While stepping away from active football, Onumonu stressed that this is not the end of her bond with the sport. “This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning. I am excited to explore opportunities off the pitch, using the skills and lessons learned from my time on it.”
She also thanked teammates, coaches, medical staff, fans, and her family for their unwavering support, adding that her love for football will “never waver.”
