Nigeria’s bid to win a record 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title got off to a disappointing start on Tuesday after the Super Falcons suffered a 3-2 defeat to tournament newcomers Malawi in their opening Group C match

Making their first-ever appearance at the competition, the Scorchers produced an impressive performance to shock the reigning champions and claim a memorable victory.

After a goalless first half, Malawi took the lead in the 73rd minute through Temwa Chawinga. Captain Tabitha Chawinga doubled the advantage six minutes later, putting Nigeria under serious pressure.

The Super Falcons responded in stoppage time when captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty in the 90+2nd minute to cut the deficit and give Nigeria hope.

However, Temwa Chawinga struck again three minutes later to make it 3-1 and restore Malawi’s two-goal lead.

Substitute Uchenna Kanu pulled another goal back for Nigeria in the 90+9th minute, but it proved too late as Malawi held on to seal a famous 3-2 win.

The result is regarded as one of the biggest shocks in WAFCON history, with Malawi defeating Africa’s most successful women’s national team in their debut appearance at the tournament.

Nigeria will now be under pressure to secure a positive result in their next Group C match to keep their title defence on track, while Malawi have boosted their chances of progressing to the knockout stage.
