Thousands of supporters who gathered at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday morning to welcome Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara went home disappointed after hours of waiting

Many had arrived as early as 6 a.m. from various parts of the state, including rural areas, but began leaving between 12 noon and 1 p.m. as the governor failed to appear.

Some local government leaders loyal to Fubara, including former chairmen of Obio/Akpor, Chijoke Ihunwo, and Port Harcourt City, Ezebunwo Itche-Mati, were seen making frantic calls as the governor’s whereabouts remained unknown.

Supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, including newly elected LG chairmen, were notably absent from the Government House. Frustrated supporters leaving the premises cited hunger and fatigue, with one saying, “We are going because we are hungry. Maybe when the governor comes, we will return.”

The event coincided with the expiration of the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, imposed following tensions between Governor Fubara and the Assembly, which is largely controlled by Wike’s loyalists.

President Bola Tinubu had declared an end to the State of Emergency on Wednesday, formally restoring full democratic governance in Rivers State. During the emergency, Tinubu had appointed Ibas as administrator after dissolving political structures to restore order in the oil-rich state.
