A suspected internet fraudster accused of killing an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during an arrest operation in Anambra has been detained, according to TheCable
An EFCC official disclosed that the suspect opened fire on operatives during a raid on Friday, resulting in the death of one officer and the injury of another. The deceased officer was buried in Sokoto on Saturday. The suspect is currently being held at the EFCC zonal headquarters in Enugu.
“The incident was very unfortunate. The slain officer was buried today in Sokoto. This incident highlights the increasing danger associated with internet fraud,” the official said.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that the police responded to a distress call on Friday and arrested the suspect in the Ifite area. A pump-action gun was recovered from the scene.
“Anambra police operatives, in the early hours of January 17, 2025, responded to a distress call at No. 1 Ekwutife Close, Ifite, where EFCC operatives on investigative duty were attacked. The incident resulted in the death of one operative and severe injury to another,” Ikenga said.
He added that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided.
Attempts to reach Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, for comments were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or WhatsApp messages.
