Syrian rebels have torched the tomb of Hafez al-Assad, the father of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, in his hometown of Qardaha, Latakia

Footage captured by AFP on Wednesday shows the mausoleum engulfed in flames, with rebel fighters and onlookers in fatigues watching the destruction.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that the mausoleum, located in the heartland of Assad’s Alawite community, was set on fire during the rebel offensive.

The video reveals extensive damage, with parts of the structure ablaze and the tomb of Hafez al-Assad completely destroyed.

The grand mausoleum, perched atop a hill, features intricate architectural designs with stone-carved ornamentation. It also contains the tombs of other Assad family members, including Bashar’s brother Bassel, who was once considered the heir to power but died in a car crash in 1994.

The attack follows a lightning offensive by Islamist-led rebels on Sunday, during which key cities were captured, culminating in Damascus and forcing Bashar al-Assad to flee. The offensive marks the end of more than 50 years of Assad family rule in Syria.
