Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery on an abdominal injury sustained during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with relegated Leicester City at the City Ground
The Nigeria international suffered the injury after colliding with the goalpost while attempting to connect with a cross from teammate Anthony Elanga. Though he initially received treatment and tried to continue, the severity of the injury was only fully discovered by Forest’s medical team on Monday. He was immediately taken in for surgery, which reports say was not life-threatening.
The incident sparked a dramatic post-match confrontation, with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis storming onto the pitch and confronting head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Marinakis was reportedly furious that Awoniyi remained on the pitch after the collision, despite Nuno having consulted the club’s medical staff during stoppage time.
Sunday’s draw dealt a major blow to Forest’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. The club, currently in seventh place, is now one point outside the Premier League’s top five with just two games remaining — against West Ham and top-five contenders Chelsea.
Although a top-five finish would have guaranteed Champions League football, Forest are now relying on other results. However, they are assured of a place in the UEFA Conference League, marking their first return to European competition since the 1995-96 season.
