Tambuwal fires back after EFCC interrogation

Former Sokoto State Governor and serving Senator, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has broken his silence on his recent interrogation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), declaring that neither the anti-graft agency nor any political force can cow him into submission

Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Sokoto, Tambuwal described his encounter with the EFCC as a “brief visit” which began on August 6 when he honoured an invitation from the agency. He said he answered initial questions and was allowed to return home but was told to come back on August 10 and 11 for further questioning.

The Senator revealed that after hours of interrogation during the follow-up visits, EFCC operatives insisted on stringent bail conditions which include, two sureties who must be directors in the Federal Civil Service with letters of introduction from their employers before he could be released.

“I told them to inform the EFCC chairman that I am a former Speaker of the House of Representatives with an unblemished record, a two-term Governor of Sokoto State, a serving Senator, and a Commander of the Order of the Niger. I should be released on self-recognition,” Tambuwal said.

Despite pleas from his legal team, which included three Senior Advocates of Nigeria, the EFCC refused to shift ground. Tambuwal was detained overnight and released the next morning after meeting the conditions.

Questioning the timing of his arrest, Tambuwal suggested the move was part of a political plot to smear his name, linking it to a “kangaroo commission of inquiry” set up by the current Sokoto administration to probe his tenure.

“In Nigeria today, there are two camps: those aligned with Bola Tinubu and his government, and those aligned with the people of Nigeria. We have chosen to stand with the people,” he declared, accusing the APC of selective justice.

“Once you join the APC, whatever your sins, they are forgiven,” he said, vowing to remain committed to what he called the coalition for national rescue.

“I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be blackmailed. No one can tarnish my record,” he vowed.
