A teenage girl was left with severe injuries after being hurled from a spinning fairground ride in Mexico
The 13-year-old suffered a hip injury when she was thrown from the ride at the Cozumel Fair in Quintana Roo Park, just south of Cancun.
Fairground staff have been accused of not properly securing the safety bar that was meant to keep passengers safely inside the ride. The terrifying incident was captured on video by a bystander who filmed the ride as it spun with 12 people on board.
As the ride picked up speed and riders screamed in excitement, the fun abruptly stopped with a loud bang, believed to be the moment the girl was thrown off.
The video takes a distressing turn as the injured teen is seen lying awkwardly on the platform, appearing to be in shock and excruciating pain.
A worker rushes over to help the girl before the footage cuts off. The shocking ejection of the teen from the ride frightened other fairgoers, including a mother and son who claimed they were holding on for “dear life” fearing they might share her fate.
Authorities have since shut down the ride after an investigation found it did not meet safety standards. Ride operators could face hefty fines for alleged negligence, reports the Mirror US.
A Civil Protection spokesperson revealed: “Our directorate in Cozumel acted decisively by closing down a ride at the local fair after a minor suffered a fall while it was in operation. The accident resulted in injuries to the minor, who was taken to the hospital by her parents for medical treatment.”
They continued, “Civil Protection personnel immediately went to the site, conducted a thorough inspection and decided to close the fairground ride. In addition, an administrative process was initiated against those responsible and a fine was issued. We will not tolerate negligence that endangers the lives of fair visitors and we require operators to strictly follow the safety rules.”
Locals weren’t shocked by the incident, with one commenting: “Everyone should know the dangers of going on those cheap fair rides by now.”
