Fuji legend Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere was caught in a violent disruption at a burial ceremony in Okitipupa, Ondo State, after suspected thugs stormed the venue and attacked his team.
The chaos unfolded on Friday at the Government Field, where Obesere had been billed to perform. Witnesses said trouble began when a group of notorious local youths invaded the event and confronted the musician’s crew.
Amid the confusion, one of Obesere’s band members was reportedly stabbed while trying to shield the team from the attackers. Details of his condition were still unclear at the time.
A guest, Bosede Akinyemi, described the scene as “chaotic and disgraceful,” recalling how guests ran for safety as the thugs went after the band and vandalised equipment.
“I was at the party. It was a very shameful act as a group of boys—known thugs in the community—caused trouble. They attacked Obesere and his band while they were performing. They descended on some of his boys and destroyed his musical equipment,” she said.
Okitipupa Local Government chairman Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin condemned the attack, saying it fell far below the values of the community.
“I received the news of the unfortunate mistreatment meted out to Alhaji Abass Akande Obesere and his team at the Government Field, Okitipupa, with deep disappointment and utmost distaste. This incident is unacceptable and does not reflect the values we uphold as a people,” he said.
He added that he would personally reach out to Obesere to convey his regrets and promised a thorough review to prevent similar incidents in the future.
