The chairman of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Tope Omolayo, was reportedly attacked and beaten by suspected thugs on Monday following an unresolved dispute
Omolayo, elected under the All Progressives Congress, had earlier been suspended by councillors over allegations of gross misconduct, with reports indicating lingering disagreements between him and members of the council.
After spending about six months out of office, he returned to the council secretariat on Monday to resume duties. However, the situation quickly turned chaotic as suspected thugs allegedly stormed the premises in an attempt to block his return, sparking a confrontation that escalated into violence.
An eyewitness said the attackers descended on him, beating him severely and tearing his clothes, leaving him almost naked. The incident reportedly caused panic across the secretariat, as staff and visitors fled for safety while gunshots were fired into the air.
Reacting to the development, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed that officers were immediately deployed to the scene to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
