President Bola Tinubu today canceled all his official events in Lagos State, where he is spending the Christmas holidays, following the de.ath of several Nigerians in stampedes such as Ibadan, Anambra and Abuja
Reports revealed that the tragedies claimed multiple lives and left several others injured.
According to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, about ten bodies were recovered after a stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, while many are hospitalized.
Similarly, no fewer than 20 residents of Okija in Anambra State d!ed during a stampede at an event for rice distribution. Not forgetting the over 35 de.aths recorded in Ibadan.
Reacting to the incidents, Tinubu expressed his condolences to the victims’ families through a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. Tinubu, who was scheduled to attend the Boat Regatta activities at his Oyinkan Abayomi Drive residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, canceled the event after receiving briefings on the tragedies. Dignitaries, including Lagos State officials and white cap chiefs, had already gathered at the venue before the cancellation.
The President urged states and relevant authorities to enforce strict crowd control measures, highlighting the similarity between the incidents in Abuja, Anambra, and a recent stampede in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Tinubu called on local and state authorities to address lapses in event planning by organizations and corporate bodies involved in charitable activities.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery. Tinubu emphasized that such mishaps are preventable with proper adherence to safety protocols by event planners.
