President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Tuesday for Lagos to join other leaders in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
The golden jubilee celebrations, which were flagged off in Accra last month, will continue in Lagos with key events, including a reenactment of the 1975 declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island.
At a commemorative event scheduled at Eko Hotels and Suites, President Tinubu, who is the current Chairman of ECOWAS, will speak on the milestones achieved by the regional body.
Also expected is a keynote review of ECOWAS’ five-decade journey by NIIA Chairman and former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi. The review will be followed by panel discussions hosted at the NIIA.
General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the only surviving Head of State who signed the 1975 ECOWAS declaration, will attend all events and deliver a speech at Eko Hotels.
Dr Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will give the welcome address.
While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also commission several federal projects on Saturday, May 31. These include Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, the Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, and the flag-off of Section II of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, as well as the 7th Axial Road.
He will also virtually commission the Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road and Yakasai-Zalli Road, in addition to flagging off the Kano Northern Bypass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.
President Tinubu is expected to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja.
