Tinubu is making progress in tackling insecurity - Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole has defended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in tackling insecurity, insisting the country is in a better place than it was before the APC took power in 2015

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Oshiomhole recalled the period when Boko Haram had overrun dozens of local government areas and even forced the postponement of national elections. He said progress has clearly been made, even though the situation is not yet fully resolved.

He pointed to the growing number of convictions secured in terrorism-related cases but questioned why some judges impose light sentences despite laws prescribing the death penalty for certain offences. He argued that judges should not exceed their legal powers by granting forms of clemency that only the President is allowed to exercise.

Oshiomhole credited recent gains in security to stronger intelligence gathering and better coordination from the Office of the National Security Adviser. He said Tinubu has shown commitment by replacing service chiefs and instructing them to aggressively confront emerging threats.

He also noted that the President directed the Inspector General of Police to recruit 30,000 additional officers to ensure that proper policing duties are handled by the police rather than the military. According to him, after the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi, the Senate advised the President to begin the process of adding 100,000 more personnel to the armed forces.

Oshiomhole stressed that Nigeria’s growing population has far outpaced the size of its security institutions, making expansion necessary. He said solutions would take time but maintained that Tinubu’s actions show concern and intent.

He added that people are being arrested, convictions are happening, and improvements are noticeable, even though insecurity has not vanished completely.
