Tinubu orders probe into killing of Travelers in Edo

President Bola Tinubu has ordered security agencies to track down those responsible for the k!lling of several travelers in Edo State

The victims, reportedly journeying from Port Harcourt to northern Nigeria, were allegedly killed by a mob in Uromi, Edo State, on Thursday.

Reacting to the incident, Tinubu condemned the attack, describing it as heinous.

“The President, who expressed shock at the dastardly act on Thursday, directed the Police and other security agencies to conduct swift and thorough investigations and punish the suspected culprits,” presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said in a statement on Friday.

Tinubu emphasized that jungle justice has no place in Nigeria and reaffirmed the right of all Nigerians to move freely across the country. He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and assured them that “criminals would not be allowed to shed the blood of innocent Nigerians in vain.”

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has visited the community, condemning the attack and ordering a comprehensive investigation.

According to a statement by his spokesman Fred Itua, the governor described the incident as barbaric and instructed the State Police Command and other security agencies to conduct a thorough and speedy probe to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

“The Governor directed the State Police Command and other security agencies to conduct thorough and speedy investigations into the matter and bring those found culpable to book. He also charged the community to work with the security agencies to fish out the culprits,” Itua said in a statement on Friday.

Governor Okpebholo also commended community leaders, particularly the leadership of the Arewa community in the area, for helping to de-escalate tensions and handling the situation with restraint. He assured that justice would be served and stressed that there was “no excuse for vigilante members to take the law into their hands without recourse to statutory law enforcement agencies.”
