President Bola Tinubu has officially forwarded Joash Amupitan’s nomination for Senate confirmation as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
The request was made in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read at Tuesday’s plenary session.

The National Council of State had unanimously approved Amupitan’s appointment on October 9. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, he will take over from Mahmood Yakubu, who completed his tenure at INEC.
In his letter, Tinubu noted that the nomination follows the provisions of Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and expressed hope that the Senate would confirm the appointment promptly.
After the letter was read, Senate President Akpabio referred the matter to the Committee of the Whole for detailed legislative review.
