Tinubu yet to pick his 2027 running mate – Presidency

The Presidency has clarified that President Bola Tinubu has not selected a running mate for the 2027 general election

According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu will only decide on a running mate after he is officially nominated by the All Progressives Congress (APC) at its national convention, expected to take place in 2026.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust on Thursday, Onanuga dismissed speculations of a rift between Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, following Shettima’s omission from recent waves of endorsements for the President.

“When I read the report, I dismissed it as a non-issue,” Onanuga said. “In a presidential system, the candidate emerges first before selecting a running mate. That’s exactly what happened under Buhari—he was nominated first, then picked his running mate. You don’t do both at once.”

He added that once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases the official timetable, the APC will hold its convention, after which the presidential nominee will announce a running mate.

Onanuga stressed that any speculation about Tinubu distancing himself from Shettima is unfounded.
