Media personality Toke Makinwa has responded after her recent comments about money and relationships attracted criticism, saying they were never meant to be taken as a serious reflection of her beliefs

The conversation started during a recent episode of her podcast with reality TV star Mercy Eke. While discussing dating and finances, Makinwa said she couldn’t relate to women who financially support the men they’re in relationships with.

She also joked that she usually talks about her own responsibilities early in a relationship and even remarked that if a man earned ₦5,000, she would expect him to spend at least ₦3,000 on her.

Those comments quickly got people talking, with many taking them as her real expectations in a relationship.

Now, Makinwa has explained that the remarks were made in jest and shouldn’t have been interpreted as her personal philosophy on love.

In a statement, she wrote:

“I’ve seen a comment I made jokingly being circulated and interpreted as a serious reflection of how I view love and relationships. For clarity, I have never believed that love should be measured by a person’s bank account or how much a man can give financially.

”I respect and believe in the beauty of two people who genuinely love each other, working hard, supporting one another and building a life together, regardless of where they may be financially.

”Money should never be the sole foundation of love or determine the value of a relationship. Partnership, mutual respect, support and growing together matter far more.

”Sometimes a joke is a joke, banter, tongue in cheek.”
