Media personality Toke Makinwa has reflected on her past marriage, sharing how she overcame public scrutiny and misconceptions about her decision to walk away
In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, the actress and entrepreneur spoke about navigating a highly publicized relationship while dealing with personal struggles few could truly understand.

“People often underestimate survivors, thinking their pain wasn’t real just because they survived and kept going,” she said. “Instead of drawing inspiration from someone’s recovery, society sometimes resents those who heal completely.”
She added, “People like to say it must not have been that bad because you didn’t die. But if someone comes back stronger, it unsettles others. Until you have walked in my shoes, don’t comment on it.”
Toke explained that she ultimately chose to leave because her marriage was already under the public spotlight, noting that she might have stayed longer if it had remained private.
“The emotional intensity and constant scrutiny made the situation dangerous for my health. Maybe I could have stayed if it wasn’t so public. But the way I loved this person would have consumed my entire life,” she said.
Despite the pain of leaving, she emphasized that choosing to prioritize herself over a toxic situation was the only way to preserve her life and future.
