Jos tailor bags 18 years for stealing from church

A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 40-year-old trader, Yakubu Abdullahi, to nine months in prison for breaking into a woman’s home and stealing.

The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced Abdullahi after he pleaded guilty to the charges. He handed down a six-month prison term without the option of a fine and also ordered Abdullahi to pay N42,000 in compensation. If Abdullahi fails to pay, he will serve an additional three months in prison.

Bokkos stated that the sentence is meant to deter others from committing similar crimes.

Earlier, Prosecutor Ibrahim Gokwat informed the court that the case was reported on July 2 at Laranto Police Station by the complainant, Kalgyang Reuben. The prosecutor detailed that Abdullahi broke into the house, stealing N20,000 in cash, iron pots valued at N30,000, two phones worth N35,000, and a basket valued at N15,000.

The crime is punishable under the Plateau Penal Code Law.
