Tragedy struck on Wednesday night in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, as eight people, including five men, two women, and a young boy, lost their lives in a fatal road accident near Adekunle Ajasin University
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state confirmed the incident, explaining that the crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. and involved a truck carrying stone dust and a motorcycle. According to him, the truck lost control and rammed into a barricade in front of the university.
He urged motorists to be more cautious, especially during the “ember months,” and to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any trip. The bodies of the victims have been deposited in a nearby hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Adekunle Ajasin University Students’ Union Government, Mosadoluwa Ajidagba, disclosed that the ill-fated truck belonged to Dangote Cement.
Ajidagba explained that the vehicle was descending from Ikare toward Akungba when its brakes failed, causing it to crash into the permanent barricade at the university gate. He noted that about ten lives were lost in the incident, adding that the Students’ Union had previously called for a ban on heavy-duty trucks passing through the town.
He appealed to students to remain calm, avoid the affected area, and stay off the highway for safety.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Executive Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government, Ayo Ajana, expressed deep sorrow over the deaths and extended condolences to the victims’ families and the Akungba community.
Ajana pledged to work with relevant authorities to introduce lasting safety measures around the accident-prone area and other dangerous spots within the local government.
