Next on President Donald Trump’s hit list Tuesday was the International Criminal Court, and he urged all nations during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly to “resign” from the global tribunal
“The United States is equally opposed to the out-of-control institution known as the International Criminal Court. We will never allow U.S. service members or anyone else to be investigated or given show trials by an anti-American tribunal with no jurisdiction over us,” he said.
“They’re an evil group of people,” he continued. “I call on all nations that are members of the ICC to officially resign from this rogue institution immediately.”
Officials in the court’s host country of the Netherlands have been notified that the U.S. will impose a new round of sanctions on the tribunal imminently, The Associated Press reported Monday. The administration has already sanctioned more than a dozen current and former staff members, including half the court’s sitting judges.
The Trump administration has repeatedly claimed that the ICC, which has 125 member states, has overstepped its authority — particularly when it comes to the court’s arrest warrants for top Israeli officials such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The U.S. has also objected to investigations into its military actions in Afghanistan.
