The idea emerged after Trump joined Chelsea’s celebrations following their dominant 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final, held in New Jersey.

The former president, flanked by wife Melania and FIFA president Gianni Infantino, watched the London club clinch the title with standout performances from Cole Palmer and goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Speaking to DAZN, Trump said, “I think we could do that,” when asked if he would consider renaming the sport to “football,” in line with international usage.

The U.S. remains one of the few countries—alongside Canada, Australia, and South Africa—that still refers to the game as “soccer,” a term that originated over 200 years ago from the abbreviation of “association football.”

Trump emphasized the unifying nature of the sport, calling it a game that “brings the world together.” When asked who he considers the greatest footballer of all time, Trump skipped over popular choices like Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, naming Brazilian legend Pelé instead.
