The offer was made public on Monday by the Trump administration, with the president emphasizing the program during an event at the White House.

“We’re going to pay each one a certain amount of money, and we’re going to get them a beautiful flight back to where they came from,” Trump told reporters. “We’re going to work with them so that maybe someday, with a little work, they can come back in if they’re good people, if they’re the kind of people that we want in our country. It will give them a path to coming back into the country.”

According to Trump, some migrants who take advantage of the self-deportation scheme may eventually qualify to return legally to the United States.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who announced the travel assistance program alongside Trump, described self-deportation as the “best, safest and most cost-effective” way for undocumented migrants to leave the US and avoid arrest.

The initiative is being facilitated through the CBP Home app, developed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to enable migrants to arrange their own departures. The DHS stated that the $1,000 stipend would be issued after confirmation that the individual has returned to their home country via the app.

“Self-deportation is a dignified way to leave the US and will allow illegal aliens to avoid being encountered by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE),” the department said.

DHS officials added that even with the travel assistance and stipend, the program could reduce deportation costs by about 70 percent. Currently, it costs an estimated $17,121 to arrest, detain, and deport a single undocumented migrant.

The agency also confirmed that one individual from Honduras had already used the program to return home.

Trump, who has pledged mass deportations as part of his campaign platform, claimed there are as many as 21 million undocumented migrants in the country.
