United States President Donald Trump has announced plans to pull the US out of 66 United Nations and international organisations, a move that would affect key global platforms focused on climate change, peace, and democracy

In a presidential memorandum released by the White House on Wednesday evening, Trump said the decision followed a review of “organizations, conventions, and treaties” deemed to be against US interests.

He added that the policy shift would involve ending US participation in the bodies and cutting off all related funding.

According to the list published by the White House, 35 of the affected bodies are non-UN organisations, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Although listed as a non-UN body, the IPCC is a United Nations-backed organisation that brings together leading scientists to assess climate change evidence and provide reports that guide policymakers worldwide.

The White House also confirmed plans to withdraw from 31 UN entities, among them the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the UN Democracy Fund, and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), which focuses on maternal and child health.

Some of the targeted UN bodies are involved in protecting vulnerable groups during conflicts, including the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children in Armed Conflict.

Reacting to the development, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a note to correspondents that the organisation would respond to the announcement by Thursday morning.

Despite repeatedly expressing a desire to reduce US engagement with the UN, Trump has continued to exert strong influence on international decision-making processes.
