Trump administration has announced a suspension of work visas for Nigerian and other foreign truck drivers, effective immediately

Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the move on Thursday, citing safety concerns and the impact on American truckers’ job opportunities.

“Effective immediately, we are pausing all issuance of worker visas for commercial truck drivers. The increasing number of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on U.S. roads is endangering American lives and undercutting the livelihoods of American truckers,” Rubio said.

The policy is part of President Donald Trump’s renewed focus on immigration since his return to office in January 2025. Under the administration’s new measures, foreign nationals from countries with high visa overstay rates or weak travel databases must pay a bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 before obtaining certain U.S. visas. This 12-month pilot program is intended to ensure travelers leave the country before their visas expire.

Additionally, the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria now requires all visa applicants to disclose social media usernames used over the past five years. Failure to provide this information may result in visa denial and potential ineligibility for future applications.
