US President Donald Trump reportedly informed Iran that he “will not attack the country” but called for caution, an Iranian envoy said Thursday, according to the Pakistani daily Dawn

Iran’s Ambassador to Islamabad, Reza Amiri Moghadam, told the publication that he “received information at around 1am, which indicated that Trump did not want war and had asked Iran not to attack the US interests in the region.”

Tensions had escalated after reports suggested the US was drawing down personnel from military bases in the Middle East, and Washington had advised American citizens on Monday to leave Iran immediately. Trump had previously threatened punitive measures against Tehran following reports of casualties during anti-government protests.

However, his tone softened in remarks at the White House on Wednesday. Trump said he had been informed that executions in Iran had ceased, adding that “if something like that happens, we will all be saddened.”

Iranian officials have accused the US and Israel of supporting what they describe as “riots” and “terrorism” amid the protests. While the Iranian government has not released official casualty or arrest figures, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimates that more than 2,600 people, including protesters and security personnel, have been killed.
