An image of Donald Trump is set to appear in some United States passports, according to officials, marking a rare and controversial departure from long-standing practice as the president continues to imprint his image on federal institutions
The move has drawn attention because there are few, if any, precedents globally—particularly in democratic systems—of featuring a sitting leader in national passports.
If implemented, Trump would become the first sitting US president to appear in Americans’ travel documents.

The State Department said the special passport editions are being introduced to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The department, which traditionally maintains a non-partisan stance, shared a sample design on social media. The version includes a stern image of Trump placed over the Declaration of July 4, 1776, with his signature appearing in gold beneath it.
A second commemorative version reportedly features a historic illustration of the US Founding Fathers instead.
“As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, the State Department is preparing to release a limited number of specially designed US passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.
