Chess champion Tunde Onakoya has fulfilled his promise to support the education of an 11-year-old girl who was featured in a viral video sweeping alongside her mother
In an update on his X account, Onakoya shared a photo of the girl and her parents, announcing that she has been awarded a full educational scholarship to cover her studies until university.
The viral video, which sparked widespread outrage, showed activist Adetoun confronting the girl’s mother about child labor.
However, Onakoya chose a different approach, drawing from his own experiences of poverty and hardship.
Having faced similar struggles, including sweeping houses and gutters with his mother in 2016, Onakoya emphasized the importance of empathy and support.
He wrote: “As promised, the young girl visited our Chess Innovation hub with her parents and has now been placed on a full ride Educational scholarship till she’s done with University.”
