Tunisia have moved swiftly to revive their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign by appointing experienced French tactician Hervé Renard as their new head coach following the departure of Sabri Lamouchi after a poor start to the tournament

The Tunisian Football Federation confirmed the appointment on Monday, June 16, 2026, stating that Renard will immediately take charge of the Eagles of Carthage as they look to recover from their opening setback. His first match in charge will be a crucial Group F clash against Japan on June 20 in Monterrey.

Lamouchi’s exit comes in the wake of Tunisia’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening game, a result that left them bottom of the group and under pressure to turn their campaign around quickly. The coach’s departure was confirmed shortly after the loss, with the federation opting for an urgent change in leadership.

Renard’s arrival brings a wealth of international experience, with the 57-year-old widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in African football.

He is the only manager to have won the Africa Cup of Nations with two different countries, guiding Zambia to a historic triumph in 2012 before repeating the feat with Côte d’Ivoire in 2015.

His résumé also includes managerial spells with Morocco and Saudi Arabia, as well as previous World Cup experience, making him a high-profile appointment as Tunisia aim to rescue their campaign.
