Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the rollout of state police and advance his new policing strategy

The announcement came on Wednesday during Disu’s first meeting with senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, just days after he was confirmed as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.

His appointment was ratified by the Nigeria Police Council and followed by his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.

Professor Olu Ogunsakin was appointed to lead the committee.

Speaking to senior officers, Disu emphasized that leadership carries responsibility, insisting that professionalism, discipline, and accountability must guide policing across the country. He stressed that authority should be exercised with restraint and that respect for human rights is non-negotiable.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness and justice, regardless of status or background,” he said.

Disu also outlined plans to strengthen internal oversight, instructing that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad operate independently to ensure transparency.

On decentralisation, he highlighted that the introduction of state police would allow different levels of government to play a role in tackling security challenges.

The development aligns with the Federal Government’s renewed support for state police as part of wider security reforms. Tunji Disu initially became acting Inspector-General on February 24, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
