The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Department of Mass Communication has set a new record by producing 18 all-female first-class graduates for the 2023/2024 academic session
The announcement was made during the 55th Convocation Ceremony on Tuesday, where 16,590 students were awarded degrees and diplomas over three days. Of these, 9,865 received first degrees and diplomas, while 6,659 were conferred postgraduate degrees. Additionally, 66 students graduated from the UNILAG Business School (ULBS).
The 18 exceptional first-class graduates include Feranmi Abiola, Ahuruele Akani, Oyindamola Arikawe, Ifedayo Ayilaran, Demiladeogo Bankole, Olaide Bankole, Eniola Daramola, Faith Enang, Temiloluwa Igbinlade, Joy Imanah, Ifeoma Iwelunmor, Chelsea Jegede, Opeyemi Kareem, Eunice Obidi, Frances Odogu, Mofesola Olanrewaju, Funmilola Onabanjo, and Peace Onuoha.
UNILAG commended the graduates for their outstanding academic achievements, highlighting their dedication, resilience, and hard work.
Some of the graduates shared their inspiring journeys. Peace Onuoha, who initially aspired to study law, motivated herself to excel in Mass Communication while balancing multiple jobs and internships. Temiloluwa Igbinlade reflected on her challenges transitioning from secondary school to university, crediting her faith and determination for her success. Eunice Obidi attributed her achievements to discipline, time management, and prioritizing academic excellence.
Other notable academic highlights included Christian Uwagwu, the best-graduating student from the Faculty of Education with a CGPA of 4.78, and Ibrahim Sefiu, the best-graduating student from the Faculty of Social Sciences with a CGPA of 4.82.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, praised the university’s strides in academic excellence, innovation, and infrastructure. She highlighted the establishment of the MED-AFRICA GMP Laboratory, the first in West Africa, dedicated to advanced HIV prevention research within the Faculty of Pharmacy.
