President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja in honor of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon

According to TVC news, the renaming is, however, subject to confirmation by the Senate.
General Yakubu Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday, served as Nigeria’s Head of State during the Civil War from 1967 to 1970.
He assumed leadership following the coup and counter-coup of 1966, events that claimed the lives of prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Sardauna of Sokoto Sir Ahmadu Bello, Western Region Leader Samuel Ladoke Akintola, and Finance Minister Festus Okotie-Eboh.
The coups also resulted in the d3aths of key military leaders, such as General Aguiyi Ironsi, Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, and others.
