The U.S. government’s push to raise tariffs on foreign imports is sparking global concern, as tensions with China intensify
On Tuesday, the White House confirmed that a sweeping 104% tariff on Chinese imports has officially gone into effect, starting today, April 9.
This development follows former President Donald Trump’s threat to retaliate against China’s 34% tariff on American goods. After China failed to reverse the measure, the White House moved forward with implementing the new policy.
“This is one of the most aggressive trade actions the United States has taken in years,” a White House official stated, noting that the tariff will be collected immediately. Officials are also continuing to investigate China’s state subsidies and other trade practices.
“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long-term trading abuses by tomorrow… the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump warned earlier. That warning has now been turned into action.
