Former British Prime Minister David Cameron’s efforts to discuss aid for Ukraine during his visit to the US faced a setback as he was reportedly snubbed by US Speaker Mike Johnson.
Cameron, in the US for meetings with former President Donald Trump and counterpart Antony Blinken, sought discussions on sending $60 billion in weapons shipments to Kyiv.
Johnson, a close ally of Donald Trump, declined a meeting with Cameron, citing scheduling conflicts. However, despite the lack of face-to-face talks, Cameron and Johnson are communicating through other channels, leaving room for potential discussions in the future.
Cameron’s visit included discussions with Blinken about potential aid for Palestinians in the event of conflict escalation in Gaza. However, peace negotiations remain elusive after a deadly terrorist attack by Hamas led to reprisals, deepening the crisis.
Cameron emphasized the need for a Plan B if ceasefire efforts fail. While rejecting calls to suspend arms deals with Israel, he expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
During his visit, Cameron met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago, discussing various topics including Ukraine aid, NATO, Brexit, and their admiration for Queen Elizabeth II. However, Trump’s reluctance to support increased aid to Kyiv posed a challenge for Cameron’s lobbying efforts.
Despite differences, Cameron compared Ukraine’s struggle against Russia to historic alliances, highlighting the importance of unity in facing global threats. However, his past criticisms of Trump may have strained their meeting, reflecting tensions between the two leaders.
The White House was aware of Cameron’s meeting with Trump, but declined to comment on its potential impact. Cameron’s visit underscores the complexities of international diplomacy amid geopolitical tensions.
