Reactions erupt following the release of Yusuf Alabi, the teenager who rose to fame during the 2023 general elections

He was freed from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, where he had been detained over alleged theft and involvement in a physical altercation.
His release was confirmed by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who took to Facebook to share details surrounding the case. According to Effiong, Yusuf was attacked by area boys for refusing to share donations he received after gaining public attention in 2023, when he stood boldly in front of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s convoy.
Effiong further accused officers at the Amukoko Police Station of falsifying Yusuf’s age, claiming he was 18 instead of 17 to avoid legal scrutiny. He demanded the Nigeria Police Force pay ₦100 million in compensation and issue a public apology, warning that legal action would be taken if their demands are not met.
Part of Effiong’s statement read:
“Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the 17-year-old teenager who gained fame during the 2023 elections after he spontaneously jumped and stood in front of Mr. Peter Obi’s convoy, has been freed by the court today, April 17, 2025.
Quadri was returning from work when he was grabbed by the duo, who along with other jealous and entitled Area Boys in the community, have been harassing him since 2023 for not giving them ‘their share’ of donations.
As part of the diabolical frame-up, officers at Amukoko Police Station also misrepresented his age to be 18.
We demand ₦100 million in compensation and a public apology from the Nigeria Police Force. Failure to meet these demands will result in legal action.”
